OpenAI bid Goodbye to China
At their recent Config 2024 event, Figma unveiled a bunch of AI-powered features that are set to shake up the design industry. We are talking image generators, interactive prototypes, and web/mobile mockups - all with an infusion of AI. But that's not all, Figma is also rolling out new products like Figma Slides and giving their interfaces a new look. Figma's chief product officer, Yuhki Yamashita, shared that the goal is to make design more accessible to everyone while supercharging the pros. Think text-based design generators and AI-enhanced search tools.
Google Translate recently just added 110 new languages, bringing their total to 223! This impressive feat was achieved using Google's PaLM 2 AI language model. The AI excelled at learning related languages, such as Hindi and its variants, as well as French creoles. One exciting addition is Cantonese, which has been highly requested but challenging to implement due to its overlap with Mandarin. It's worth noting that about 25% of the new languages are African, and each addition is spoken by at least a million people globally. This update represents a significant step towards making communication more accessible worldwide.

YouTube is venturing further into the world of AI-generated music, following the debut of its Dream Track feature last year. The platform is now in talks with major record labels like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records to expand its AI music capabilities. YouTube is offering one-off payments to license songs for training new AI tools, planned for release later this year. This move aims to legally clone more musicians' styles, potentially involving dozens of artists. Although, this initiative faces significant challenges. Many artists and labels have expressed concerns about AI's impact on music creation. Sony Music has warned against unauthorized use of its content, while Universal Music Group recently had a dispute with TikTok over AI-generated music.
What are your thoughts on AI in music creation?
China is about to face a major shake-up in the AI industry. Come July 9th, Chinese developers will lose access to OpenAI's platforms. It's not just about ChatGPT - this affects a whole range of AI-powered tools that businesses rely on. Chinese companies are scrambling to fill the gap, but they are facing an uphill battle. With restrictions on top-notch chips, keeping pace with global AI advancements won't be easy. This change is not happening in a vacuum. There is a growing view among US tech leaders that AI is a critical national security issue. Some even see it as a potential game-changer in military technology.
