Uber Unveils Its New Driverless Robotaxi for 2026
Uber has revealed its new robotaxi, giving the public a clearer picture of what driverless rides on the Uber app could look like in the near future. The vehicle was unveiled at CES 2026 and is the result of a partnership between Uber, electric car maker Lucid Motors, and autonomous driving company Nuro.
The robotaxi is built on Lucid’s Gravity SUV, which is known for its spacious interior and long electric range. On top of the vehicle is a large sensor system made up of cameras, radar, and lidar that allows the car to see what is happening around it in real time. Inside, passengers get screens that let them control things like climate and music, and even watch how the car is interpreting the road while it drives itself.
The self-driving system is powered by Nuro’s autonomous software, with computing hardware supplied by Nvidia. Uber says the vehicle is designed to reach Level 4 autonomy, which means it can handle most driving situations on its own without human input, at least within specific cities and conditions. Testing has already started in the San Francisco Bay Area with safety drivers on board, and Uber plans to begin offering paid robotaxi rides later in 2026.
For users, the experience should feel familiar. You would request the robotaxi directly from the Uber app just like a normal ride, except there would be no driver behind the wheel. Uber plans to roll out thousands of these vehicles over time and expand to more cities if the initial launches go well.
This move puts Uber deeper into the race for autonomous transportation, alongside competitors like Waymo, Tesla, and Zoox. While fully driverless rides have been promised for years, Uber’s new robotaxi suggests the company believes the technology is finally close enough to start scaling in the real world.
