What do you think of a French Speaking AI Voice Assistant?

Your Weekly AI Digest: [06-7-2024]

Hello community member,

Welcome to July! As we plunge into the second half of the year, we cannot help but anticipate all the amazing innovation that will launch in the AI industry. For starters, French billionaire, Xavier Niel just unveiled a new AI voice assistant called Moshi. The best part, it has a French accent. Looks like OpenAI needs to start watching over their shoulders a lot more now. This and many more we bring to your doorstep today - so, grab a seat, sit back, and indulge. It's time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. WhatsApp is test-running new AI Avatar Feature

  2. Moshi: French Accent AI Voice Assistant unveiled

  3. Apple to join OpenAI board

  4. Microsoft layoffs employees once again

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that lets you create personalized avatars using advanced AI. It is pretty nice—you can make these avatars look like you and place them anywhere you can imagine, like in a forest or even in outer space. All you have to do is upload a few photos of yourself, and Meta’s AI will take it from there, creating these custom images based on your preferences. To get started, you'll need to turn on the feature in your WhatsApp settings. After that, you can easily generate these avatars by typing commands like "Imagine me in..." in Meta AI chat or your regular WhatsApp chats. They are still ironing out the details, so we don't have an exact launch date yet. But it's part of WhatsApp's plan to gradually introduce more AI features, making messaging more personalized and fun.

There's a French AI lab called Kyutai, backed by billionaire Xavier Niel, that just unveiled its new voice assistant called Moshi. It is an impressive one because Moshi can speak with 70 different emotions, almost like a real person. They showed it off in Paris, where it gave advice on climbing Mt. Everest and even recited a poem with a strong French accent. Kyutai's CEO, Patrick Pérez, says Moshi thinks as it speaks, which they believe will change how we interact with machines. They're planning to release the technology as open-source soon, which means anyone can use and tweak it. It's interesting because Kyutai sees itself as a competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT and other big names in AI. They are also addressing safety concerns by using tools to track where the audio comes from. Overall, it's a big step for AI development in Europe, backed by some heavy hitters in tech.

Apple is now going to have a seat on OpenAI's board, just like Microsoft does. This comes after they struck a deal to bring OpenAI's ChatGPT to Apple devices. Tim Cook mentioned this is a big deal for them to boost AI features, including making Siri even better. Phil Schiller from Apple's team will be the observer on the board, which means he can join meetings but can't vote. Microsoft got a similar role last year because they've invested a lot in OpenAI. It's all part of this big race among tech giants like Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta to use AI in new products. US regulators are watching closely how these big companies work with AI startups. Apple's new AI features, called "Apple Intelligence," are set to launch later this year, powered by technologies like ChatGPT.

Microsoft made some job cuts this week affecting different teams and places. They didn't say how many people were affected, but posts from employees on LinkedIn show it hit staffs in product and program management roles. Microsoft says these changes are part of their regular adjustments to keep things running smoothly. They're focusing on areas that matter for their future growth and to help out their customers and partners. This isn't the first time they have done this recently. Last month, they cut about 1,000 jobs, especially in their Azure cloud and HoloLens areas. Back in January, after buying Activision Blizzard, they let go nearly 2,000 people from their gaming unit. Microsoft's been expanding a lot, especially during the pandemic, but now they are fine-tuning things as they move forward.
