OpenAI’s Image Maker and the ‘Ghibli’ Trend Taking Over the Internet

OpenAI just added an image-making tool to ChatGPT, and people cannot get enough of it. The feature, powered by GPT-4o, lets users turn text into detailed pictures. It became so popular that OpenAI had to pause access for free users because demand was way higher than expected. CEO Sam Altman even said they did not expect it to take off this fast. From fun art projects to professional designs, this tool is changing how people create images with AI. One of the biggest trends to come from this update is “Ghiblification.” People are using AI to turn personal photos, famous faces, and even memes into drawings that look like they came from a Studio Ghibli movie. It all blew up after software engineer Grant Slatton shared an AI-made Ghibli-style image of his family.

Some people love it, but others feel copying an artist’s style without permission is wrong. Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Studio Ghibli co-founder, has always been against AI art.
