Sora to Share Revenue with Studios Over Character Use
OpenAI is making a major change to its viral AI video app, Sora, giving studios and creators much more control over how their beloved characters are used. Facing mounting pressure from Hollywood and rights holders, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced late last week that the company is switching up its copyright policy for Sora. Generating videos featuring copyrighted characters.
Sora's initial policy was criticized for being an "opt out" system, meaning a studio had to explicitly ask for its characters to be blocked. Now, Altman says they are moving to an "opt in" model. This means that rightsholders will have to grant specific permission for their characters to appear in user generated videos. Altman calls this "more granular control," allowing creators to decide exactly how (or if) their intellectual property can be used.
Since the app's launch, users have been generating far more content than expected, including countless clips featuring famous, copyrighted characters. This led to serious concerns about legal headaches and misuse of intellectual property. Altman framed the shift as a collaboration, noting that many rightsholders are actually "very excited for this new kind of 'interactive fan fiction,'" but they need the ability to set the rules.
The second major part of the announcement is about money. Because Sora usage has skyrocketed, generating high operating costs, OpenAI needs to find a way to monetize. Altman confirmed the company will begin exploring a revenue sharing model with rightsholders who agree to let their characters be used in videos. While the details of this payment system are still being worked out, the goal is to cover costs and incentivize studios to participate, making the platform a new source of engagement (and income) for them.
