Amazon launches new R&D group focused on agentic AI and robotics

Amazon is now working on a brand new research group focused on creating advanced AI and smarter robots. The company announced on June 5 that this new team will work on what’s called “agentic AI”, a type of artificial intelligence that can take action and make decisions by itself, with little or no help from humans. This new team will be based in Lab126, Amazon’s hardware division, the same group behind gadgets like the Kindle and Echo. Their goal is to build robots that can understand simple language instructions and carry out tasks on their own, instead of just doing one specific job like most robots today. Amazon wants to use these robots in places like warehouses, delivery centers, and even for bringing packages to your doorstep. Reports say they are already testing delivery robots in a special testing area near their office in San Francisco. These robots may even ride in electric vans and complete deliveries just like human workers do. This development is part of a bigger plan. Earlier this year, Amazon’s cloud division (AWS) also started working on agentic AI tools. The company sees this as a big step for the future where AI can do more of the work for you, automatically and efficiently.

Snapchat has introduced a new app for the Apple Watch, allowing users to preview and respond to messages directly from their wrist. While the app doesn’t support sending photos or videos, it enables users to reply to messages using the Apple Watch’s keyboard, scribble input, or voice dictation. This development is part of Snapchat’s broader strategy to make its platform accessible across various devices, including tablets, web browsers, and now wearables. In a blog post, the company stated, “Already we’re seeing our community enjoy using Snapchat across surfaces including tablet and web, in addition to mobile, and this builds on our commitment to making Snapchat available across all the devices you use, including wearables.” The launch of the Apple Watch app is notable, especially as several major companies, such as Instagram, Slack, Lyft, Uber, Amazon etc. have discontinued their Apple Watch apps in recent years. This update underscores Snapchat’s commitment to providing users with flexible and convenient ways to stay connected.

OpenAI has added a new feature to ChatGPT that lets it connect to your Google Drive, Dropbox, and other cloud storage accounts. This means you can now ask ChatGPT questions about your documents, like your work reports or travel logs, and it will read the files and give you helpful answers. For example, you could ask, “What was our revenue in Q1 last year?” or “How many ferry rides did I take in Italy?” and it will look through your files and give you a clear answer, with links to where it found the info. Another interesting feature is something called “record mode.” You can use it during meetings or brainstorming sessions, and ChatGPT will take notes for you. It will even highlight key points and action items so you don’t miss anything. Right now, these features are available if you are using the paid versions of ChatGPT like ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, or the version made for schools. Record mode is only for Team users, and that plan starts at $25 a month per person.

Figma has introduced a new feature called the Dev Mode Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This tool allows AI programs, like GitHub Copilot and Claude Code, to directly access detailed design information from Figma. Instead of analyzing images, these AI tools can now read exact data such as chart values and color codes, making it easier to convert designs into working applications. The MCP server is currently in beta and available to users with Dev or Full seat access in Figma. Figma plans to enhance this tool further by adding features like remote server access and deeper integration with codebases. This release follows Figma’s earlier launch of “Figma Make,” a platform that allows users to create applications by simply describing them. Additionally, Figma is set to roll out the “Sites Code Layers” feature on June 12, which will help AI tools transform designs into interactive websites.
