Sam Altman Just Apologized to a Community for Something ChatGPT Should Have Flagged Months Earlier

In a letter published in a local Canadian newspaper this week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman offered a public apology to the residents of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following a mass shooting that killed eight people. The apology centers on a troubling fact; OpenAI had flagged and banned the suspected shooter’s ChatGPT account back in June 2025, nearly a year before the attack, after the account was used to describe scenarios involving gun violence. The company debated whether to alert law enforcement at the time, and ultimately decided not to.

OpenAI eventually reached out to Canadian authorities, but only after the shooting had already happened. The Wall Street Journal first reported that OpenAI employees had raised internal alarms about the account months before the tragedy. The question of why those alarms did not lead to a call to police has not been fully answered publicly.

Sam said in his letter that he had spoken with Tumbler Ridge’s mayor and British Columbia’s premier, and that all parties agreed a public apology was necessary. His words were direct: he said he was deeply sorry that his company did not alert law enforcement when the account was banned. British Columbia Premier David Eby acknowledged the apology but was clear about its limits, saying it was necessary and yet grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge.

OpenAI has since said it is improving its safety protocols, including putting more flexible criteria in place for when accounts are referred to authorities and establishing direct points of contact with Canadian law enforcement. Canadian officials are also reportedly considering new AI regulations in response to the incident, though no final decisions have been made.
