OpenAI’s Sora Lands on Android After iOS Success

OpenAI has officially launched its AI video generator Sora on Android, expanding availability to users in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

This comes just two months after Sora’s impressive iOS debut in September, when the app skyrocketed to #1 on the App Store and racked up over 1 million downloads in its first week. Now available on the Google Play Store, Sora is positioned to reach an even broader audience across both major mobile platforms.

The Android version mirrors its iOS counterpart with full feature parity, including the popular “Cameos” tool that lets users generate AI videos featuring their own likeness in various scenarios. The app also includes a TikTok-style feed where users can share creations and discover content from others, a clear signal of OpenAI’s ambitions in the social video space. This puts Sora in direct competition with established giants like TikTok and Instagram, as well as Meta’s recently launched AI video feed, Vibes.

Sora’s rapid growth hasn’t been without controversy. Shortly after launch, the platform faced backlash over deepfake videos depicting historical figures like Martin Luther King Jr., prompting OpenAI to pause such content generation and strengthen content moderation guardrails. The company has also navigated intellectual property concerns, switching from an “opt-out” to an “opt-in” system for copyrighted characters after users created unauthorized videos of characters like SpongeBob and Pikachu. Additionally, OpenAI is currently embroiled in a trademark dispute with celebrity video platform Cameo over the name of Sora’s signature feature.

Looking ahead, OpenAI isn’t slowing down. Upcoming features include the ability to create AI videos featuring pets and inanimate objects, basic video editing tools for stitching clips together, and customizable feeds that prioritize content from selected creators rather than algorithmic suggestions.
