OpenAI’s Launches Sora 2.0

OpenAI just dropped something unexpected on Tuesday: Sora 2, their improved video generator, plus a whole social media app to go with it. Similar to TikTok, but for AI-generated videos.

The big upgrade with Sora 2 is that it actually understands physics now. Older models would cheat to make things work. If a basketball player missed a shot, the ball might magically teleport into the hoop. Now it bounces off the backboard like it should in real life.

The real headline is the social app and its “cameos” feature. You upload a video of yourself once, and then you can drop yourself into any AI-generated scene. Even better, you can share your digital likeness with friends so they can put you in their videos too. Imagine creating clips of adventures you never actually took with your friends.

The iOS app launches today in the U.S. and Canada, invite-only for now, though ChatGPT Pro users get immediate access. It’s free at launch, with plans to only charge for extra videos during peak times. Users can post their creations to a TikTok-style feed, and the app uses your activity, location, and even ChatGPT chat history to recommend content. There are parental controls included, but they only work as well as parents understand them.

Sharing your AI likeness with friends opens up serious safety concerns. Even someone you trust could create misleading or harmful videos using your digital double. Non-consensual AI videos are already a big problem, and there aren’t many laws governing what platforms are responsible for. OpenAI’s taking a big swing here, but whether people actually want a feed full of AI-generated videos remains to be seen.
