It’s time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. OpenAI brings ChatGPT to your landline

  2. Google releases its own ‘reasoning’ AI model

  3. Instagram teases AI tools for video edits using text prompts

  4. OpenAI says it has no plans for a Sora API

Starting this Wednesday, ChatGPT is now available on landline phones. Yes, you can dial 1-800-CHATGPT, and the AI assistant will answer. OpenAI’s goal is to make ChatGPT accessible to more people, so they have expanded it beyond smartphones. You can ask questions or even get things like translations, just like with the voice feature in the app. For U.S. callers, you get 15 minutes of free talking, but keep in mind that carrier fees might apply. If texting is more your style, ChatGPT is also on WhatsApp. The texting option is straightforward, though it doesn't have all the customization of the app. You don’t need an account to use it, but there’s a daily limit. OpenAI is planning to add more features soon, like image analysis and web search. This all started as a quick hack week project, and it is impressive to see it up and running.

Google has just introduced a new AI model called Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, but it is still in the testing phase. Available on Google’s AI Studio, this model is designed to handle complex reasoning tasks like coding, math, and physics. Google describes it as a big step in improving AI’s ability to think through problems and even fact-check itself. That said, it’s still a work in progress. The model takes longer to respond because it pauses to think and explain its reasoning before answering. While this helps it avoid common mistakes, it can make things slower. For example, when asked how many R’s were in the word "strawberry," it incorrectly said “two.” Even though there are some kinks to work out, Google sees potential here and is committed to refining the model for better results down the line.

Instagram is about to roll out some exciting new AI tools for video creators. In a recent video, Adam Mosseri shared that these tools will let you change nearly anything in your videos just by typing text prompts. Whether it’s switching outfits, changing your background, or even adding accessories like jewelry, the idea is to give creators more freedom to bring their ideas to life. These new features will be powered by Meta’s Movie Gen AI model, which can already generate videos and sounds from text. While the preview looks pretty seamless, it is still unclear if the user tools will perform as smoothly once they are available. Meta’s announcement comes after similar tools from OpenAI and Adobe, who have also launched AI-powered video editing options. Instagram’s new AI features are expected to arrive sometime next year, giving creators fresh ways to enhance their content.

OpenAI recently confirmed that it won’t be releasing an API for Sora, its AI model that creates realistic videos from text or images, at least not for now. During an AMA, Romain Huet from OpenAI mentioned that there are no plans for a Sora API yet. One reason might be the capacity issues OpenAI faced when Sora launched, so many people signed up that they had to pause applications temporarily. CEO Sam Altman even apologized for underestimating the demand and promised they are working to get everyone access as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s competitors are moving ahead with their own video generation APIs. Google launched one for its Veo model, with plans to release an API for its improved Veo 2 in 2025. AWS and startups like Runway are also offering APIs for their video models, with some already being used by major tech companies to generate large volumes of videos permission to train ChatGPT. These news companies say their articles, created with a lot of time and effort, were taken without consent or compensation and used for profit. The lawsuit doesn’t just ask for damages—they also want OpenAI to stop using their work entirely. OpenAI, on the other hand, says it trains its models on publicly available data, follows fair use principles, and even allows publishers to opt out if they don’t want their content included. This isn’t the only lawsuit OpenAI is dealing with right now, but it raises big questions about where the line should be between innovation and respecting copyright.
