Hello community member,

Every week, I argue with my editor on whether or not to rename this newsletter “The OpenAI Chronicles” because each week, there’s a brewing dilemma and it’s either chaotic or mildly not. I would love to dish out some tea here but I wouldn’t rather you have the full details - certainly the subject line must have given it off. As always, we don’t disappoint with updates from the week. So, grab a seat, sit back, and indulge. It’s time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. Huawei’s New Phones Let You Share Photos with just a Hand Gesture

  2. Google’s AI Video Model (Veo) Launches Ahead of OpenAI’s Sora

  3. Amazon Launches Its Own AI Models to Compete with Industry Leaders

  4. OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT Pro for $200/Month

Huawei has introduced a unique feature in its Mate X70 series: sharing photos and files with simple hand gestures. The lineup, including the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro, and Mate 70 Pro Plus, lets users transfer content without wires or internet.

A video demonstration shows a mother holding her palm over her phone to "grab" a photo and unclenching her fist near a Huawei tablet to "drop" it. Shoppers testing the feature have shared similar experiences online.

This futuristic addition positions Huawei as a strong competitor in the smartphone market, especially in China.

Google has introduced its new AI video model, Veo, which is now available in a private preview through Google’s Vertex AI platform. This tool allows businesses to create high-quality videos in different styles from text or images, making it easier to produce engaging content.

Announced in May, Veo has hit the market ahead of OpenAI’s competing model, Sora, which is yet to be released. Google’s examples show that Veo can create realistic videos that are hard to distinguish from human-made ones.

As companies like Coca-Cola already use AI-generated videos in their advertising, businesses are unlikely to wait for Sora’s release, especially with Google reporting that most companies using AI have seen revenue grow.

After years of speculation, Amazon has finally unveiled its own family of AI models, called Nova, at its AWS re: Invent conference. These models handle tasks involving text, images, and video and are claimed to be 75% cheaper than top competitors.

This move raises questions since Amazon recently invested heavily in Anthropic, an AI company, and its models. However, Amazon seems determined to control its own AI future instead of relying entirely on external partners. The Nova models aim to reduce costs for customers and offer features like video that other providers lack.

By offering both its Nova models and external options like Anthropic’s, Amazon is positioning itself as a flexible and cost-effective choice for AI solutions. This reflects its broader AWS strategy—providing customers with many options at competitive prices.

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Pro, a new $200-per-month plan for its AI chatbot. This premium tier offers unlimited access to the company’s most advanced AI tools, including an improved version of its reasoning model called o1.

The new o1 model is faster, more accurate, and now capable of analyzing images. It’s designed for heavy users who rely on ChatGPT for tasks like coding, math, and writing. OpenAI claims the model makes fewer mistakes on tough questions and provides quicker responses by thinking more efficiently.

While o1 excels in many areas, it doesn’t perform as well as earlier versions on some tests. Still, this high-priced plan targets professionals and power users who want the best ChatGPT experience available.
