OpenAI Just Replaced ChatGPT's Default Model

OpenAI has released GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant. The upgrade brings better accuracy in high-stakes areas like law, medicine, and finance while keeping the fast response times the previous model was known for. On the maths side, the new model scored 81.2 on the AIME 2025 benchmark compared to 65.4 for its predecessor, and also outperformed it on multimodal reasoning tests.

GPT-5.5 Instant can now search back through your past conversations, files, and Gmail to give you answers that are actually relevant to your life and work rather than generic responses that assume you are starting from scratch. The feature is rolling out first to Plus and Pro users on web, with mobile and free users getting access in the coming weeks. ChatGPT will also now show you exactly which memory sources it used to generate an answer, and you can delete or correct any that are outdated or wrong.

When OpenAI retired its GPT-4o model in February, a wave of users signed petitions and described the model as their best friend or a mirror. Some said losing it felt like losing a relationship. OpenAI has not forgotten that backlash, and the decision to keep GPT-5.3 available to paid users for three more months before fully phasing it out feels like a direct response to the lesson learned.

For developers, the model is available via API as "chat-latest," giving them access to the latest default without having to chase version numbers manually.
