Google Transforms Play Store with AI-Powered Features
Google is rolling out major updates to its Play Store that bring artificial intelligence front and center for its 4 billion users. The tech giant is betting that AI-powered personalization will make its app marketplace more engaging and help users discover content tailored to their specific interests.
The most notable addition is "Guided Search," which lets users find apps by describing what they want to accomplish rather than knowing the exact app name. Want to find a new home? Just type "find a home" and Google's AI will surface relevant real estate apps. This conversational approach to app discovery could significantly lower the barrier for users exploring new categories.
The redesigned Apps tab introduces curated spaces that adapt to both seasonal trends and individual user preferences. While this feature initially launched in India and Japan with region-specific content like cricket and comics, it's now expanding to the US with WNBA content and to Korea with video-focused recommendations.
For gamers, Google is introducing an ambitious "AI Sidekick" feature that provides real-time gaming assistance through an in-game overlay. Powered by Gemini Live, players can ask for tips and guidance without leaving their game. The feature launches with support for popular titles like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes and FC Mobile from EA and Netmarble.
A new "You" tab centralizes the user experience with personalized recommendations, subscription management, and progress tracking across all Google Play content. Gamers get custom profiles with AI-generated avatars and cross-device achievement tracking.
The updates also include Play Games Leagues for competitive challenges and enhanced Game Detail Pages with community Q&A features. Google Play Games on PC is officially exiting beta, bringing over 200,000 mobile games to Windows desktops.
These changes represent Google's broader strategy to transform the Play Store from a simple app repository into a personalized entertainment destination that keeps users engaged longer and discovers new content more intuitively.
