Google launches Gemini Live

Your Weekly AI Digest: [17-08-2024]

Hello community member,

Another weekend is here and we have landed in your inbox to give you a rundown of everything that happened in AI this week. You’ll get to learn about Google’s new development, Gemini Live as well as the controversy surrounding the release of Grok-2 - so, grab a seat, sit back, and indulge. It's time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. Walmart adopt AI across various business operations

  2. Google releases Imagen 3, it’s AI to text image generator

  3. xAI releases Grok-2, adds image generation on X

  4. Google launches Gemini Live, it’s Voice Mode for AI conversations

Walmart is making significant strides with artificial intelligence to enhance shopping experience. Walmart has been using AI to refine their product catalog, improving over 850 million data points. This means more accurate inventory management and better search results for us when looking for items. They are also introducing a smart shopping assistant. For instance, if you are in the market for a new TV, you could ask which one is best for watching sports, and it would provide tailored advice. In the future, it might even consider factors like the lighting in your room to offer more precise recommendations. Additionally, Walmart is testing a tool to help their marketplace sellers interact more efficiently with their system. This behind-the-scenes improvement aims to streamline the selling process

Google just released their new AI image generator, Imagen 3 and it is impressive. It can create high-quality images from text descriptions, similar to what you might have heard about with Midjourney or DALL-E 3. What caught our attention is how Google is approaching this. They have put a lot of thought into making it safe and responsible. They have added filters to reduce harmful content and even included a digital watermark on the images. People are already trying it out, and the results look promising. The AI seems better at understanding what people are asking for and creating detailed images. It's even getting better at putting text in images, which has been a challenge for AI.

Elon Musk's company, xAI, has just launched new versions of their AI model called Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini. What is noteworthy is that Grok can now create images on X. It's currently available for Premium users on X, with plans to expand access soon. Grok doesn't seem to have many restrictions on generating images of political figures. Also, xAI is looking to integrate Grok into X for things like improved search and AI-powered replies.

Google has just launched a new feature called Gemini Live. Essentially, it allows you to have a voice conversation with their AI model, Gemini. You can talk to it naturally, interrupt, change topics - pretty much like you would in a regular phone call. It's available now for Android users with a Gemini Advanced subscription, with iOS support coming soon. This move puts Google in the same league as companies like OpenAI and Meta. But there are some questions about potential risks. For instance, during similar tests, some AIs mimicked users' voices without permission. Google is also integrating Gemini more deeply into Android devices. You can access it easily and it can interact with what's on your screen.
