Google Just Announced Smart Glasses With Warby Parker

Google announced a new line of AI-powered smart glasses at its I/O 2026 developer conference on Tuesday, and the company is taking a very different approach from its last attempt. Rather than building something futuristic and polarising like Google Glass, the new devices are being made in partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, two fashion-forward eyewear brands that people actually want to wear. Samsung is also involved in the design. The glasses will work with both Android and iOS devices and are expected to launch later this year.

Google is calling them audio glasses, and the name tells you exactly what they do. You talk to them, and they respond. Using Gemini and Google's wider ecosystem of apps and services, the glasses handle tasks through voice commands alone. The demo at I/O showed someone ordering a coffee online by simply speaking to their glasses, without touching a phone or opening an app.

The comparison to Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses is unavoidable, and Google is not trying to hide from it. Meta's wearable has quietly become one of the more successful hardware products in the AI space, proving that people will wear AI on their face if it looks like something they would actually choose to put on. Google is clearly watching that playbook and running a version of it with its own AI stack and its own fashion partners.

What is notably absent here is any display or camera, at least in what has been shown so far. These are audio-first devices, which keep them simple, light, and socially acceptable in a way that screen-heavy glasses have never quite managed to be.
