Google’s new AI model, Gemini. Despite a turbulent start, Gemini is really starting to shine. It just climbed to the top of the Chatbot Arena leaderboard, beating out big names like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5. The Chatbot Arena is this platform where the best chatbots are compared to see which is leading the pack. Until recently, GPT and Claude were the stars. But now, Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro has taken the spotlight. This is a big deal for Google, especially considering the unsteady development phase of Gemini, which was earlier called Bard. The early reviews from Google’s own team were pretty harsh, calling Bard “cringe-worthy” and even potentially dangerous. There was a lot of criticism aimed at Google CEO Sundar Pichai for how things were handled. But now, it looks like Google has really turned things around. Gemini has become the model to watch, showing how far they have come.
Google is adding three new AI features to make your browsing experience even better. First up, Google Lens is coming to desktop! It was only on mobile before, but now you can use it right from your desktop browser. Just click the Google Lens icon or use the right-click menu to search for anything on a webpage. The results will show up in a side panel with visual matches and AI-generated insights. You can even refine your search or ask follow-up questions. Next, there’s a new feature called “Tab Compare” that’s perfect for online shopping. Instead of jumping between tabs to compare products, Chrome will now gather all the details like specs, prices, and reviews into one easy-to-read overview. This will make it much simpler to compare and decide what to buy. Lastly, Chrome’s browsing history search is getting a big upgrade. You can now find sites you visited before just by typing a natural question like, “What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?” The AI-driven search will pull up the relevant pages from your history. These new features are rolling out in the U.S. soon and are designed to make your online experience smoother and more efficient.

You know how Microsoft and OpenAI have been working together for a while? Well, things are getting a bit competitive now. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, Microsoft has added OpenAI to its list of competitors. This means OpenAI is now considered a rival, alongside big names like Amazon and Google. Even though Microsoft has invested a huge $13 billion into OpenAI to help develop advanced AI systems, both companies are now vying for a bigger piece of the AI market. OpenAI’s latest project, SearchGPT, is stepping into the search game, directly challenging Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s search tools. It is even more interesting that SearchGPT uses AI to give more intuitive search results. For example, if you ask for quick dinner recipes, it might suggest a pasta dish that takes just 20 minutes to make and explain why it’s a good choice. This reflects a broader trend in the industry towards smarter, AI-enhanced search features that aim to understand and respond to user needs more accurately. What the future holds for both brands is still unclear but we will keep you updated on any new information.
Not surprised.
AdAge: Google Pulls Olympics AI ad after backlash
"Google has pulled an ad from its Olympics’ TV rotation after it garnered significant backlash, the tech giant confirmed to Ad Age. It remains viewable on YouTube, though comments are turned off."

The recent Google ad has been getting a lot of attention, and not necessarily the good kind. The ad showcases Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, helping a dad write a letter to Olympic gold medalist Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone for his daughter. The idea was to show how AI can assist with such tasks, but it’s rubbed many people the wrong way. Critics feel that having AI write fan letters is impersonal and takes away from the valuable experience of kids learning to write themselves. Linda Holmes from NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour called the ad "gross" and "heartless," stressing that personal effort is important. Parents on Reddit shared similar feelings, describing the ad as "disgusting" and "tone deaf." Google defended the ad by saying AI is meant to enhance, not replace, human creativity. Despite that, the response suggests people want a more thoughtful use of AI, especially in personal and educational contexts.
