Google DeepMind has introduced AlphaProteo, an AI system designed to create new proteins that bind to target molecules. This breakthrough could reshape drug design and disease research. For the first time, an AI system has successfully designed a protein binder for VEGF-A, which is linked to cancer and diabetes complications. Across seven different proteins, AlphaProteo showed up to 300 times better binding success than existing methods, including a strong performance against the viral protein BHRF1. However, it struggled with proteins like TNFɑ, related to autoimmune diseases.

Trained on vast protein data, AlphaProteo’s ability to design accurate protein binders could speed up early-stage research significantly. While there’s still much work to be done in practical applications, this innovation holds exciting potential in areas like drug development and disease understanding. Google DeepMind is working closely with experts to ensure its responsible development and real-world impact.

Elon Musk’s latest AI venture, xAI, launched its supercomputer, Colossus, over Labor Day weekend. Impressively, the project was completed from start to finish in just 122 days. Colossus was built to train Grok, xAI’s large language model (LLM), designed to compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4. Currently, Grok is available only to paying subscribers on Musk’s platform, X, but experts think it could eventually power Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus.

Located in Tennessee, Colossus houses 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips, making it one of the most powerful AI training systems globally. Musk plans to double its capacity in the coming months.

Musk is aiming for Grok-3, the next version, to be the world’s most powerful AI by December. To fuel these ambitions, xAI has raised $6 billion from top investors and may soon see a $5 billion investment from Tesla. Musk is clearly positioning himself to lead the AI race, challenging his former company, OpenAI.

1X, a leader in humanoid robotics, has unveiled NEO Beta, a bipedal humanoid designed for home use. This prototype represents a significant leap in robotics, moving away from rigid, traditional designs to create a robot that can safely work alongside people. The launch of NEO Beta marks 1X’s transition from concept to reality, with plans to bring these humanoids into consumer households.

The company emphasizes safety, ensuring NEO Beta is designed to operate securely in homes. A limited number of NEO units will be deployed this year for research and development in selected homes, helping gather important feedback on real-world performance.

1X’s mission is to provide an abundant source of physical labor using safe, intelligent robots. To reach this goal, NEO Beta will be tested in various environments, paving the way for humanoids to assist with everyday tasks in the near future.
