ElevenLabs launches AI music generator cleared for commercial use

ElevenLabs, the company best known for its AI voice technology, is officially stepping into the music space. This week, it launched Eleven Music, a new AI tool that can generate complete songs, vocals and instrumentals, from a simple text prompt. But what truly sets it apart is that the company claims the generated music is cleared for commercial use.

Unlike other AI music tools currently under legal fire, ElevenLabs has preemptively secured licensing deals with two major rights organizations: Merlin Network, which represents thousands of independent labels, and Kobalt Music Group, one of the biggest independent music publishers in the world. These partnerships allow ElevenLabs to legally train its model on real music from participating artists, who in turn receive a share of the revenue. It’s a big step toward building trust between AI platforms and the music industry. The platform works through natural language prompts. Users can type something like “A mellow acoustic ballad with introspective lyrics, similar to early 2000s indie folk,” and Eleven Music will output a full track in minutes. The product is launching in alpha mode and currently supports English-language songs, with plans to expand to more languages soon.

To address concerns over misuse, ElevenLabs says it has implemented strong safety filters: users can’t generate songs that mimic existing artists or contain offensive content. And the company made it clear that its training data excludes works from major labels like Universal, Sony, and Warner, for now.

This launch is happening in a tense legal climate. Competing AI music generators like Suno and Udio are currently being sued by the RIAA for allegedly training on copyrighted songs without permission. ElevenLabs’ approach, secure the licenses first, then launch, could set a new precedent for how AI music platforms operate moving forward.

Some industry leaders are cautiously optimistic. ASCAP’s CEO Elizabeth Matthews commented that AI can be a powerful tool for creativity, but only if companies respect the rights of human creators. Analysts say Eleven Music could appeal especially to independent creators and brands who want access to affordable, customizable soundtracks without the licensing headaches.
