ByteDance Launches AI Tool That Creates Videos From a Photo

Your Weekly AI Digest. 08-02-25

In partnership with

Hello community member,

This week ran by pretty quickly - unlike January, it seem as though February has a place to be - and so does John Schulman, co-founder of OpenAI who recently just exited Anthropic but to where next? Guess we will have to find out. As always, we are serving this weekend again - So grab a seat, sit back, and indulge. It's time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. Google Unveils Gemini 2.0

  2. OpenAI co-founder John Schulman exit Anthropic

  3. TikTok’s Parent Company, ByteDance Launches AI Tool called OmniHuman-1

  4. Meta launches new program to improve speech and translation AI

Google is putting some advancements in place with big updates to its Gemini 2.0 models. One of the most interesting ones is Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking. This AI doesn’t just give out answers, it actually takes time to break down complex questions step by step before responding. The idea is to get more accurate results, even if it takes a little longer. Then there’s Gemini 2.0 Pro, Google’s most advanced AI model yet. It’s designed to be even better at things like coding and math, making it a solid option for developers and researchers. You will find it on the Gemini app, AI Studio, and Vertex AI. Google is also rolling out Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, a more budget-friendly version that’s just as fast as the previous model but performs even better. With AI competition heating up, Google is pouring $75 billion into AI this year—more than double what it spent in 2023.

John Schulman, one of OpenAI’s co-founders, is leaving Anthropic. He joined the company last year after leaving OpenAI, wanting to focus on AI alignment and hands-on technical work. Now, he’s moving on again, and Anthropic has confirmed his departure, saying they support his decision to explore new opportunities. Anthropic has been growing fast, pulling in about $875 million a year and making its AI models available both directly and through platforms like AWS. With Schulman leaving, it’s another sign of how quickly things are shifting in the AI world. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and others are all racing to build the most advanced AI, while also figuring out how to keep things safe and aligned. Schulman’s exit might shake things up a bit, but one thing’s for sure, the AI competition isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, just launched a new AI tool called OmniHuman-1, and it’s pretty good. This tool can take a single photo of a person and turn it into a video where they appear to be talking, singing, or even dancing. It’s not just simple animations, this AI recreates full-body movements and matches them with sound to make the videos look super realistic. ByteDance trained the AI on thousands of hours of human videos, so it knows how people naturally move, gesture, and express emotions. That means with just one picture, it can generate a full-motion video that looks and feels real. Of course, with tech like this, there are always concerns. Deepfakes and misinformation are already big issues, and tools like this make them even trickier to manage.

Meta is taking a big step toward making AI-powered speech and translation better. They just launched a new program, teaming up with UNESCO to collect speech recordings and transcriptions. The goal is to improve how AI understands and translates different languages, making communication smoother for people around the world. Right now, AI translation still struggles with accents, dialects, and the little nuances that make languages unique. By training its models on a wider range of real-world speech, Meta hopes to fix that. Of course, there’s always the question of privacy—how they collect and use this data matters. People want better AI, but they also want their voices and data handled responsibly. So, as Meta moves forward, it will be interesting to see how they balance progress with transparency. If done right, this could be a huge leap toward breaking language barriers and making digital conversations more natural for everyone.
