ChatGPT Finally Has a Linux Desktop App

OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, closing one of the more conspicuous gaps in its product lineup. The company acknowledged that Linux was one of the most requested platforms for the desktop app, and said this launch extends ChatGPT and Codex across every major desktop operating system.

The app is out now worldwide in preview, and Linux users can access ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex through it. Supported distributions include desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. That list looks narrow next to the hundreds of Linux distributions that exist, but the ones OpenAI picked serve as the base for a wide range of downstream flavours, which should also work with the apps.

The reason this matters more than a typical platform expansion is who uses Linux. It is the default operating system for a huge share of developers, systems engineers, and infrastructure teams, exactly the audience OpenAI is trying to win with Codex as it competes for the coding market. Leaving them without a native app while shipping polished Mac and Windows versions was an odd gap, and members of the open source developer community had been openly pushing OpenAI to fix it for a while.

OpenAI is also playing catch-up here. Anthropic released a Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago, supporting Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. In the ongoing fight for developer loyalty between the two companies, being second to the platform developers actually work on is not a great look, though at least the gap is now closed.
