Anthropic Nears $170 B Valuation with Potential $5 B Mega Round
Anthropic is lining up one of the largest private raises in AI history. According to reporting on July 29, the Claude developer is in talks to secure between $3 billion and $5 billion led by Iconiq Capital, a deal that would lift its valuation to about $170 billion. That figure is nearly triple the $61.5 billion mark Anthropic set only four months ago, underscoring how quickly capital is chasing frontier-model labs.
The new money would vault Anthropic into the top tier of privately held tech firms by market value, trailing only OpenAI at roughly $300 billion and SpaceX at about $400 billion. That league-table position matters: every rung higher gives Anthropic more leverage when negotiating for cloud capacity, chip supply, and marquee enterprise deals.
Iconiq is not the only name circling the term sheet. Bloomberg’s sources say Anthropic has been sounding out sovereign wealth funds including Qatar’s QIA and Singapore’s GIC as potential co-investors. Internally, the outreach has stirred debate. In a memo obtained by Wired, CEO Dario Amodei admitted discomfort with money tied to authoritarian regimes but argued that the scale of modern model training leaves few alternatives.
For investors, the calculus is straightforward. Anthropic claims annual recurring revenue near $4 billion and is expanding fast on the back of enterprise demand for Claude models. The company also spends heavily on clusters of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, compute that reportedly runs into billions per year. A 12-figure valuation gives Anthropic fresh firepower to stay in the compute arms race without ceding ground to rivals.
