Bit-Size AI Update

Alt + Space = Google’s latest hack for your PC

Google just dropped something interesting for Windows users that might make poking around your files and apps way faster. It’s like Spotlight on Mac, but built by Google.

Google is rolling out an experimental desktop app for Windows, which works on Windows 10 or newer, that lets you open a search box by pressing Alt + Space. From there, you can dig into everything: your local computer files, installed apps, stuff in Google Drive, or just web results. It’s all in one place. It’s coming from Google’s “Search Labs,” their playground for new ideas where people can try things early and give feedback before they roll out widely.

Another feature is that Google Lens is built in. So, if you see an image with text or want to translate something, or even do math from a snapshot of the screen, this app has got your back. There’s also an “AI Mode.” If you’re dealing with a question that’s kind of messy, say, multiple parts, or you want deeper info, you switch into that mode and the AI gives more thoughtful responses. Same search box, more power behind it. You can also filter your results by categories like images, shopping, videos, etc., and switch to dark mode if you prefer that look.

One limitation for now is that it is only in English and only available in the U.S. So if you’re outside the U.S. or need another language, you might have to wait. And yes, it must be on Windows 10 or later. If you want to try it out, it’s available via Google’s Search Labs.
