AWS Unveils Nova 2: New AI Models and Custom Training Service

Amazon Web Services just announced a major update to its Nova AI model family at this week's re: Invent conference in Las Vegas. The company is launching four new models under the Nova 2 banner and introducing a service that enables businesses to build their own customised versions.

Since launching Nova last year, AWS reports that tens of thousands of customers have adopted the technology, ranging from major companies like Robinhood and Blue Origin to smaller startups.

The Nova 2 lineup comprises four distinct models, each designed for a specific task. Nova 2 Lite is a budget-friendly option that can handle text, images, and videos for everyday work. It's a reasoning model, meaning it thinks through problems before responding. Nova 2 Pro steps things up for complex work like coding and can process text, images, videos, and even speech. Nova 2 Sonic focuses on conversation, working as a speech-to-speech model for interactive AI applications. Nova 2 Omni is the all-in-one powerhouse that can handle images, text, video, and speech as input, and create both text and images as output.

The bigger news might be Nova Forge, AWS's new service that lets companies create their own custom AI models for $100,000 a year. Businesses can start with pre-trained or partially trained models and then fine-tune them using their own data.

AWS CEO Matt Garman explained why this matters. When you try to customise already-trained AI models by adding lots of new data, they can actually forget some of what they learned earlier. It's similar to how adults struggle more with learning new languages compared to kids. Nova Forge aims to solve this problem by giving companies more control over the training process from earlier stages.

Big names like Reddit, Sony, and Booking.com are already testing out Nova Forge to create models tailored to their specific needs.

With these launches, AWS is pushing further into the competitive AI market, giving businesses more options to either use ready-made models or build something completely customised for their operations.
