You Can Now Tell ChatGPT To Pass You A Cup of Water #Issue10

Your Weekly AI Digest: [16-3-2024]

Hello community member,

OpenAI seems to be cooking something good for us. Imagine what a robot version of ChatGPT can do. Right? So much! It appears that tech and E-commerce giants are gearing towards the adoption of AI into their products and it is a good development towards the revolution of AI. It’s the weekend, and there’s no better place to get updated than with our weekly newsletter - so, grab a seat, sit back, and indulge. It's time to savor the excitement of what the AI world has served up this week!

Here's your curated dose of the most significant events in the AI ecosystem this week:

  1. Apple acquires Canada-based AI startup

  2. Anthropic releases Claude 3 Haiku model

  3. Amazon AI now lets sellers create listings through a URL

  4. Figure collaborates with OpenAI to put ChatGPT in a robot body

Apple has acquired Canada-based AI startup, DarwinAI - specializing in vision-based technology for manufacturing efficiency. Although Apple and DarwinAI haven't officially announced the deal, several startup members joined Apple's machine learning teams in January. DarwinAI, with over $15 million in funding, received support from investors like BDC Capital, Honeywell Ventures, Obvious Ventures, and Inovia Capital. BDC Capital confirms an exit from DarwinAI, while Obvious Venture's portfolio reflects the acquisition. Bloomberg noted that DarwinAI's tech can make AI models faster and smaller, which could be a game-changer for Apple's upcoming features in iOS 18. Tim Cook hinted at this move, saying they are gearing deep into GenAI-powered features. Looks like Apple is actively exploring AI integration in areas like Siri, developer tools, and even customer support.

Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku, a new AI model, stands out for its speed, affordability, and versatility, surpassing competitors like OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and Google's Gemini 1.0 Pro. Anthropic indicated that Haiku has 3x speed for most tasks, handling a whopping 21,000 tokens per second. That means it can zip through prompts and facilitates responses quickly, making chats lively and getting lots of petty task done in a minutes. What's more, Claude 3 Haiku excels in grade school math, coding, reasoning over text, and other benchmarks. And guess what? It also offers cost advantages, analyzing large volumes of documents for half the cost of other models in its tier. Anthropic's Claude 3 model family includes Sonnet and Opus, with Haiku being the most affordable, boosting analysis, creating content, and chatting in multiple languages like Spanish, Japanese, and French.

Amazon introduced generative AI features last year, allowing sellers to create listings quickly with minimal input. Now, if you're a seller and your item is already listed somewhere else online, Amazon's got your back. Their new tool is like magic—it scans the item's URL from another site and a new listing on Amazon is born. No more fussing around with details; just plug in the URL, and let Amazon's AI do the work. This feature, initially available in English for U.S. sellers, leverages existing listings by inputting a URL, automatically generating high-quality listings for Amazon's store. In October, Amazon launched a tool for advertisers to create contextual backgrounds, resulting in a 40% higher click-through rate. Over 100,000 sellers have tried Amazon's generative AI tools, with an impressive 80% acceptance rate for AI-generated suggestions. Other companies like Google, eBay, and Shopify have also incorporated AI-powered tools for product-related tasks, highlighting the growing trend in AI's role for advertisers and retailers.

Figure, a $2.6 billion AI robotics company, partnered with OpenAI to create Figure 01, a robot that integrates OpenAI's AI. This robot can engage in real-time voice conversations, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice, without relying on text prompts. Using onboard cameras, Figure 01 identifies visual cues and responds accordingly, such as handing over an apple when prompted about hunger, all within about 10 seconds. Figure 01 is capable of complex conversations, describing what it sees, planning actions, reflecting on memory, and explaining reasoning verbally. It operates by capturing images, transcribing speech to text, and processing data through OpenAI's multimodal model. In a demonstration, Figure 01 explained its action of handing over an apple, showcasing its contextual understanding. This development raises intriguing questions about the future of AI integration in robotics and its potential impacts on human interaction and decision-making.
